Seattle has been twinned with Perugia since 1993. The City has a population of about 650.000 inhabitants.
Seattle is the largest city in Washington State, known for its strategic location on the Pacific coast, dramatically situated between Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains. Its international harbour facilities link the Pacific Northwest with Alaska and Asia, and its extensive ferry system is the largest in the country.
Seattle owes its name to the Native American leader Sealth, chief of the Suquamish tribe. Its official nickname is the “Emerald City” thanks to its many parks and surrounding evergreen forests.
The city offers a mix of urban energy and natural beauty. Stunning views abound, from the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Mountains and Olympic Mountains to Mount Rainier and Mount Baker. Lakes and water views are everywhere. It’s an ideal place for those who love to stay in contact with nature.
Seattle is a hub of corporate and technological innovation. It is where the Boeing Company was founded and it is the corporate headquarters of Microsoft , Amazon.com and Starbucks Coffee Company. Well known by music fans, the city is the birthplace of guitarist Jimi Hendrix and the home of the “grunge movement” exemplified by Pearl Jam and Nirvana.
Pike Place Market, Seattle’s original farmers market, is a popular tourist attraction set along the waterfront in the heart of downtown.
Some other popular attractions are the iconic Space Needle, built for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, and the Seattle Art Museum.
