Aix-en-Provence

France

Aix-en-Provence has been twinned with Perugia since 1970. It is located in the south of France approximately 30 km from Marseille. The city has about 150,000 inhabitants and is home to one of the most prestigious universities in France.

The city is a jewel of Provence, one of the most admired regions in Europe known for its natural beauty and strong cultural traditions. It lies at the center of an enchanting territory with picturesque villages and fields of sunflowers and lavender dominated by the majestic Sainte-Victoire Mountain.

Aix-en-Provence, called AquaeSextiae in Roman times, has more than 40 public fountains bringing to mind the city’s ancient ties to water. It is a spa town and its abundant cold and hot springs offer tourists a relaxing and healthy holiday. The largest and most famous fountain is on the Cours Mirabeau, the main avenue with cafés, shops and elegant buildings with aristocratic façades and richly decorated doors.

Paul Cézanne, father of modern painting, was born here. His paintings, admired in the most prestigious museums in the world, tell of his life and of the amazing landscapes of Provence.

Aix is also a lively city able to combine periods and cultures. It is an international city open to the world and respectful of cultural diversity. Here rich artistic heritage and economic and social dynamics live in perfect harmony.
