An extraordinary feat of hydraulic engineering
Inside the basement of Palazzo Sorbello, the monumental well-water tank, a real feat of Etruscan hydraulic engineering, was built with the same technique with huge travertine blocks of the Etruscan walls, in the III-II Centuries b. C.
The cover, base of the well ring, presents a mighty double trusses, each made by five monoliths. 36 m deep and with a maximum diameter of 5.6 m, is supplied by spring water; it also gathered rainwater, channelling it inside.
It was one of the main public water tank of the city in Etruscan and Roman eras, probably the most important one. The original well ring in piazza Piccinino dates back to the XVI Century. After renovation works for the museum, an explanatory video introduces the monument to the visitor; only 10 people at a time.
