Montessori School Santa Croce
Via dell’Asilo 1
Cenacle of scientific pedagogy
In 1861 the monumental complex of the Convento of the Carmelites (XIV Century), was transformed into the first public kindergarten of the city by an association of citizens philanthropists, to offer aid and instruction for poor children. Made “Ente Morale” in 1877 and “Opera Pia” in 1890, the Santa Croce was attended by protagonists of women’s liberation movement and of the social and cultural development, among whom Regina Margherita, the poetesses Alinda Bonacci Brunamonti and Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj and by the famous pedagogist Maria Montessori.
In 1909 Maria Montessori was appointed for introducing her method inside the school. Since then the school has kept and transmitted this revolutionary pedagogy, being today the most ancient method school in the world. In 1950 Maria Montessori made the Santa Croce a prestigious centre for training for teachers making a observation school room, first scientific attempt of pedagogy in the world; today it is the Maria Montessori School Room
