Abazia San Benedetto in Pietrafitta or of the Seven Friars

Voc. Abbadia Settefrati 49 Pietrafitta Piegaro PG

One of the most ancient abbeys of the peruginian territory

The Abbey of San Benedetto in Pietrafitta, successively of the Seven Friars, the martyr brothers of the II Century A.D., is one of the most ancient in the Peruginian territory. Its construction, due to the Benedictine Monks, dates back to the late XI and the early XII Centuries, but lie on even more ancient remains as the Roman crypt shows.

From 1475 was entrusted to Peruginian noble families - here shown in time sequence: Baldeschi, Oddi, Baglioni, Della Corgna. In 1614 it became property of the Pope Paul V’s family (Camillo Borghese) and after the Italian Unification it became property of the Sposini family, present owner, which used it for agricultural purposes. Important restorations were ordered by Cardinal Fulvio della Corgna between 1565 and 1570. Of the original structure, the colonnade, the loggia, the cells, the refectory, the entrance and the church are still visible today. The logge , the stairs and the rooms in the noble floor are grotesque decorated with allegoric scenes and sacred episodes from the Old Testament, by Savio Savini and Scilla Peccenini.

The church façade is made of calcareous stone with a rose window, the side walls are in brick. The inner structure has a unique nave with lunette barrel vaults. On the wall behind the altar, a XVI Century fresco portraying a Madonna with Child and Angels with the Seven Martyr Brothers at the bottom, dead between the 134 or 164 A.D. In the same wall, two doors: the right door lead to the crypt, the left one to the presbytery. In it, the ancient church altar, with the inscription “Crux, Lux, Lex, Vita”, heritage of Benedictine order.
