The palace was built between 1473 and 1481 by the lombard architects Gasperino di Antonio and it stands in the square once known as “Sopramuro”, today Matteotti. It received the ‘Capitani del Popolo’ (Captains of the People) and later the ‘Bargelli’ (captains of the guards).
It has medieval and Renaissance architectural elements with antecedents ancient structures. The façade, originally presenting another upper order and crowned with battlements, collapsed due to the 1741 earthquake but was restored to it's actual structure by Luigi Vanvitelli, and it can be admired today.
In the underground are buildings of Roman foundations, erected by the end of the XIV Century.
Today seat of the Court of Law, it can’t be visited.
