Antiquarium Museum
Via Cornaletto, 4c - Corciano
A “Diffused Museum” close to its territory
The Municipal Antiquarium, opened in 2009, is a modern concept exhibition area, including characteristic elements of man’s presence in Corciano territory from the Palaeolithic age to the Etruscan and Roman age.
The Museum is divided into three chronological areas:
- Palaeontology: with fossils of ammonites and mammals;
- Prehistory and Protohistory: with archaeological finds of the area from the early Palaeolithic, to the Iron Age;
- Classical Archeology: with Etruscan finds, among which the princely bronzes of the Archaic period from Castel San Mariano, and findings of the Hellenistic period. Within here some tombs from the Necropoli of Strozzacapponi – Fosso Rigo have been reproduced full size and the funerary objects placed in the original position. Furthermore, to be seen several sacred ornaments of different places of worship, given as offers to protect health, for humans and animals both, or the fertility. The area is closed by an interesting core of roman objects, such as findings from the Roman Villa of Palazzo Grande and the funerary objects of tombs “alla cappuccina” (with sloping tiles on the body of the deceased), discovered in the area.
