Civic Museum at Palazzo della Penna

Via Podiani 11

Collections of contemporary art and exhibition spaces

Collections of contemporary art and exhibition spaces.

The civic museum at the Palazzo della Penna is situated in the noble XVI Century residence of the gentry family of Perugia Arcipreti della Penna, and was therefore the house where Ascanio della Penna during the XVII Century, and his great grandson Fabrizio in the XIX Century, placed their important art collection, unfortunately split up in 1875.

The Palace was built on the ruins of a Roman amphitheater, which were discovered following restauration works of the ‘80s; they are parts of walls in opus cementicium (concrete) of the external front of a peripheral gallery; the visible part of it is about 35 m long. On the southern side the Palace incorporates part of the mediaeval city walls.

Restored in the early XIX Century, it was frescoed by the Umbrian Painter Antonio Castelletti, with themes inspired by Paris Myth. Of the same period are the ideal views in the Sala dei Paesaggi (landscape room), by the decorator and scenographer Pasquale Angelini.

The collection of the museum includes:

The Collection “Gerardo Dottori” (1888-1977): rich series of masterpieces by the Umbrian futurist maestro.

The Collection “Joseph Beuys in Perugia” (1921-1986), 6 big boards in sequence drown in Perugia (by the Rocca Paolina) on the 3rd April 1980 during a public meeting with Alberto Burri.
