Porta Eburnea - Eburnea Gate

The city district’s ensign was in ancient times a deer, afterwards substituted by a tower astride a harnessed elephant, which explains the gate’s name (Eburnea in Italian means ‘made of ivory’ as the animal’s fangs); the tower, symbol of vigilance, could represent the 'turris eburnea’, connected with the Virgin Mary.

The Patron Saint is San Giacomo, who appeared also in the ensign attired as a pilgrim. Its representative colour is green, possibly a reference to vegetable gardens located on this side of the city, facing south. From this district departed the royal way towards Orvieto.
