The district derives its name from its patron saint, Santa. Susanna, that also appears as its symbol, together with the more ancient one the bear. Subsequenatly came the chain, emblem of this part of the city still today, symbolizing the barrier against enemies, as witnessed since 1327 in via dei Priori. Its colour is light blue, also in reference to the colour of the waters of lake Trasimeno that is reached through this gate facing west along the road that leads to Cortona.
