Hypogeum of San Manno

Via Fra’ Giovanni di Pian del Carpine Loc. Ferro di Cavallo

The Etruscan tomb of the Precu family

The tomb (III-II Century B.C.), which belonged to the Precu family, is located along the main road leading to Lake Trasimeno and Chiusi, about 5 kilometers from Perugia. It is the crypt of the church of San Manno, within the architectural complex owned by the Sovereign Order of Malta.

It consists of a large rectangular room (7.70 x 5.4 x 3.65 m) with barrel vault and it is entirely covered with large blocks of travertine. Of particular importance is the five-meter-long inscription, on several lines,  located on the left wall of the entrance, on which one reads the names of the family that owned the tomb.
Recently restored, it is the most important example of a barrel vaulted structure in the Perugia area.
